Bloubergstrand Cycling

If you like riding your bicycle then you must experience a trip in this beautiful part of the world! Home to the great Cape Argus bicycle tour and many scenic pathways. People regularly drive up and down the Bloubergstrand beach road, others prefer to take the exilarating Chapman's Peak drive that crosses around Table Mountain. The Blouberg Hill located between Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand is also often done as a day's outing, but beware, the hill is quite aggressive.

Bloubergstrand cycling has become quite an exciting theme lately and has developed into a great past-time and /or excercise for young and old. There are numerous other bicycle events held regularly and all it takes to enter is a bicycle, and yourself!

Cape Argus Cycle Tour

The biggest bicycle tour in South Africa, this event draws thousands of spectators from all over the world and has fast become a great addition to the sporting events in Cape Town.

The Pedal Power Association (or PPA) is the largest cycling organization in South Africa. It currently has some 16 000 paid-up members, spread all over the country, although the largest component is in the Western Cape, where the Association has its headquarters. The PPA Office is staffed by ten employees, who administer the running of the Association and co-ordinate the fun-rides that are staged for the benefit of the members and other cyclists within the greater Western Cape.

The Route

The start is in the city centre, outside the Civic Centre. You then travel along the M3 to Lakeside where you will be diverted on to Boyes Drive. You will then rejoin the Main Road at Kalk Bay after a steep descent from Boyes Drive. From there you take the coastal road to Simonstown and then go past the entrance to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. You then continue to Scarborough and on to Oceanview, missing the Kommetjie Hill. Then its Chapman’s Peak and up Suikerbossie and along the coast to Greenpoint.

The Mountain Bike Challenge

The MTB Challenge is an official event of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Lifecycle Week and part of the build-up to the annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.

The first MTB Challenge took place in 2002 and the event has grown from 700 riders, almost 1300 in 2004 to over 4 200 in 2009.

The 2009 Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB Challenge was the biggest MTB event in the country at the time.

Take a thrilling mountain bike ride through the exquisite Boschendal Wine estate. Test your skills on steep slopes, corkscrew turns and furrowed vineyards. Both seasoned bikers and brave newcomers will have plenty of opportunities to test their limits over a variety of routes.

And if you prefer relaxing with a glass in your hand – instead of gripping the handlebars then book a picnic, bring the family and sample some of Boschendal’s exquisite wines in the picturesque scenery of the Franschhoek valley.
