Bloubergstrand Kite Surfing
Kite surfing aka kiteboarding is
one of the fastest growing water sports. So with Cape Towns legendary
wind and mostly shark free waters, why not give it a bash whilst on
holiday. It would be a shame to waste that expensive travel insurance.
Essentially a combination of the technologies used in paragliding and
wake boarding, kite surfing involves using the power of the wind, to
pull you across the water’s surface with a wakeboard of sorts,
strapped to your feet. Perfect timing and speed combined, allows professionals
to leap hundreds of metres at a time with the right wind conditions.
Kite surfing in South Africa offers fun adventures and breath-taking
rides. Whilst it takes a bit of practice and co-ordination to steer
your kite and guide your board, kite surfing is a brilliant way to make
the most of windy day.
In the picture above, you will see the newest addition to Bloubergstrand
where a 77 meter Turkish bulk coal carrier ship ran aground on 7 September
2009 after some bad weather and failed engines. Kite Surfing has become
a very popular sport in Bloubergstrand and whenever the wind is right,
there are hundreds of kite surfers on the ocean, swirving around this
enormous ship.
The other beach, Big Bay, hosts highly rated kite surfing contests
every year. Winds are usually about 10-30 knots. Contrary to common
sense, learning to kitesurf is not difficult. Just a few lessons (highly
adviseable) and you will be up and annoying surfers in no time. There
are a number of operators in the area, that offer lessons and range
from R250 to R400 per lesson. (You’ll need 3-5 lessons) All the
equipment is provided and of course lessons only run on days with wind,
not normally a problem in summer.
Conditions
Wind: SE gusty, 14-35kts
Kite: Ozone C4 size 7m²
Swell: SW, 15-30ft face
Kite Buggying
A kite buggy is a light, purpose-built vehicle powered by a traction
kite (power kite). It is single-seated and has one steerable front wheel
and two fixed rear wheels. The driver sits in the seat located in the
middle of the vehicle and accelerates and slows down by applying steering
manoeuvres in coordination with flying manoeuvres of the kite. This
activity is called kite buggying. The speed achieved in kite buggies
by skilled drivers can range up to around 110 km/h.
